Since Advent marks the beginning of our church year, there is a sense in which all of us need a beginner’s guide to these familiar stories. So this year’s Advent study book is Light of the World: A Beginner’s Guide to Advent, by Amy-Jill Levine. Levine is both a New Testament and Jewish Studies professor at Vanderbilt. She begins this book by confessing that she loves Christmas (AJ is Jewish) and has loved Christmas from childhood, “but now I appreciate,” she writes, “not only the decorated tree but also the fruits the good trees bear. There is more beauty to Advent than Christmas music and depictions of Madonna and Child. There is more value to the joy the season brings and the hopes it raises when we recognize the fascinating rich, and provocative aspects of the stories of Jesus’ birth.”

Over the four weeks of Advent, we’ll discuss the Meaning of Memory, the Promise of Potential, the Journey to Joy, and the Gifts of the Gentiles. We’ll have a chance to hear from her each week as she shares in a set of videos to get our conversation going.

Intrigued? Looking for a good conversation and a great read for the weeks of Advent? Join us on Wednesday mornings or Wednesday evenings as we read AJ Levine’s Advent book together.
