Cold Weather Shelter is February 10-16!
The Howard County Cold Weather Shelter is a collaboration of Grassroots Crisis Intervention, faith communities, and the Howard County Government to provide emergency housing and services during the winter. This year will be First Pres’s 20th year of participation!
This year, it will be held at the Grassroots Emergency Shelter at 6700 Freetown Road in Columbia. The 20 guests for the winter months will join 50 long-term residents at the shelter - so lots of people will need our help.
Each congregation has been asked to provide:
Food for one week (7 days) of continental breakfast, hot lunch, and hot dinner for all 70 guests;
Three volunteers to serve at each meal; and
A volunteer front-door greeter from 7 am to 3 pm (4 two-hour shifts per day).
The shelter has a full kitchen with professional staff present for all meals. Breakfast is served from 5:00 am to 7:30 am, lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, and dinner from 5:00 to 6:30 pm.
Our congregation has signed up for the week of Monday, February 10th through Sunday, February 16th. We are looking for individuals, groups or families to provide the hot lunches and dinners each day (the church will provide the breakfasts); and for individuals to serve as greeters. Sign up to volunteer HERE!
Volunteer servers or greeters must fill out a form, sign a confidentiality agreement, undergo a background check, have an up-to-date COVID and flu vaccine (or wear a mask), and be at least 15 years old. This does not apply to those just dropping off food.
Thanks for being a part of this important and long-standing ministry of our church!
